Everything Means Nothing

I would like an engagement ring, but because I like jewellery and not for what it’s supposed to stand for. I’d like a beautiful wedding dress because I like clothes, and I want a big wedding because I like parties with lots of food, people and dancing. Parties and new clothes are not good reasons to marry. Don is a good reason to marry. Everything means nothing without him.

If I Ain’t Got You

Some people live for the fortune
Some people live just for the fame
Some people live for the power, yeah
Some people live just to play the game

Some people think that the physical things define what’s within
And I’ve been there before, and that life’s a bore
So full of the superficial

Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, yeah

Some people search for a fountain
That promises forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that’s the only way to prove you love them

Hand me the world on a silver platter
And what good would it be
With no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me

Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you

Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, yeah

If I ain’t got you with me baby
So nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If I ain’t got you with me baby

Heart Strings Like a Symphony

It was only when I found out that ex-husband was in love with someone else that I realised that it had been years since I’d felt anything but platonic affection for him. I guess I was too caught up with the kids, and my job, and also my depression.

I was devastated when my marriage ended, but not because I felt I was losing the great love of my life. It was because of the way things unravelled. Things got ugly and everyone behaved badly. So badly.

Who would have predicted it? Things happen. People change. Love (whether we’re falling into or out of it) makes fools and monsters out of most of us.

If only someone would warn us, but then, if they did, would we believe them?

Nocturne by W.H. Auden

Nocturne

Make this night loveable,
Moon, and with eye single
Looking down from up there,
Bless me, One especial
And friends everywhere.

With a cloudless brightness
Surround our absences;
Innocent be our sleeps,
Watched by great still spaces,
White hills, glittering deeps.

Parted by circumstance,
Grant each your indulgence
That we may meet in dreams
For talk, for dalliance,
By warm hearths, by cool streams.

Shine lest tonight any,
In the dark suddenly,
Wake alone in a bed
To hear his own fury
Wishing his love where dead.

~ W.H. Auden (1907-1973)

There is another poem by Auden, also called Nocturne, which I love less. I suppose I find it less relateable – oh, yes, I often wake alone in the dark, shaking my fist at loves present and past.

I Felt It From the First Embrace

I don’t think I’ve recovered from watching La La Land. Stop reading if you haven’t seen the film yet and are bothered by spoilers. I don’t think I’m giving anything away, but who knows what you may read between the lines.Read More »

Ordinary People

So, as I was saying in my previous post, I finally finished watching the first season of Insecure, the HBO series starring Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji.

I don’t watch much telly and don’t keep up, so I had not heard of the show. I happened upon it when googling about Nigeria: one link led to another and I suddenly found myself watching a recording of a radio interview with Yvonne Orji.

Orji is my partner Don’s surname and in the interview the radio host remarks on how it sounds like Orgy, something I’ve always laughed about.

Anyway, I looked up Insecure immediately after that, started watching the series, and binged on Season 1’s final three episodes today.

OK, if you haven’t yet watched the series and intend to, there will probably be spoilers after the ‘read more’ tag.Read More »
